Updates In Special Education

Coolidge Special Education

CISD's Special Education Program is committed to supporting students with unique educational needs by designing individualized academic programs to help them reach their maximum potential and prepare them for the future. The district focuses on possibilities rather than limitations for each child.

The program also provides special transportation, homebound services, speech and occupational therapy, accommodations for visual or hearing impairments, and a transition program that assists students who are completing high school to enter the next stage of life.

Special Education Director Erin Cox serves as an advocate for each child and his or her parents. She is passionate about serving students and works closely with school staff to help identify children with special educational needs and refer them for proper testing to determine their disability.

She regularly collaborates with students, parents, administrators, counselors, regular education teachers, and special education teachers to develop individual educational plans (IEP) that allow students to learn in the least restrictive classroom environment.

Mrs. Cox and the district are committed to doing whatever is needed to help each child in the special education program to succeed in academics and life.

Child Find

Every Child Deserves a Chance

Children with learning disabilities need special help in school. But not all disabilities that interfere with learning are easily recognized. Symptoms of children with disabilities include awkwardness, clumsiness, confusion, forgetfulness, frustration, shyness, aggressiveness, or the inability to concentrate.

Child Find is a process mandated by the Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA). Child Find is a continuous process of public awareness activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and refer school age and younger children who may benefit from early intervention or education services.

ESC Region 12 and local independent school districts offer information, referral services, and public awareness to parents and community members at no cost.

For information on free services for children birth through 21 years old with disabilities, call Erin Cox, CISD Director of Special Education, at (254) 786-2206 x224.
